Madrid 2009 Overview

Med-Vet-Net�s success showcased at final meeting

Med-Vet-Net has hosted its final Annual Scientific Meeting, attracting more than 210 delegates to the Spanish town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, home to one of the country�s most important historical monuments.

Rooker Prize

The Rooker prize is a newly established international annual prize for individuals who have made a significant contribution to livestock animal health by way of research into the understanding of animal diseases and/or their prevention or treatment.�

Fur, feather and fever

Society for Applied Microbiology Summer Conference
Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

Scientists from all over world will converge on this high-profile conference, which is packed with the latest developments in research on zoonotic disease � from arthropod-borne zoonoses, like the plague and Lyme borreliosis, to diseases transmitted via companion animals, such as exotic pets.

Poster Prize Winners

During the Madrid 2009 Conference, the Chairs of each of the oral sessions chose their favourite posters. Prizes were awarded at the Gala Dinner. A �People�s Prize� was also voted for by delegates and a �Best Communicated� and �Best Graphic Design� was awarded by the Communications Unit.

MVN Association

The Med-Vet-Net Association was formerly registered in early June 2009!

The Governing Board of the MVN Association has voted in Valerie Baduel from Afssa as President and Roberto LaRagione from the VLA as Vice-President of the Association. In addition, John Threlfall from the HPA has been appointed as Project Manager and Arnaud Callegari from Afssa has been appointed as Financial Officer. Congratulations to them all!

WP21 and 29 Meeting

Workpackages 21 and 29, which both deal with antimicrobial resistance, held their final meeting from 14��16 April.

The three-day joint meeting in Paris signalled the closing of the two projects.

During the course of the meeting each workpackage made six to seven presentations outlining the enormous amount of results coming from their collaborations, and partners discussed the best way of communicating those results.�

Final internship

The last ever module of the Science Communication Internship was completed in May with four delegates mastering the basic skills of good communications.

With Med-Vet-Net finishing this year, only one module of the highly successful internship could be offered, and scientists from as far afield as Brazil and India, enrolled in the course held from 4�15 May in Milton Keynes, UK.

Hopkins prize

Katie Hopkins from the UK�s Health Protection Agency has been awarded the highly prestigious W. H. Pierce Memorial Prize.�

The annual prize is awarded by the Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM) to young microbiologists (under 40 years of age) who have made a substantial contribution to microbiology.

OBE Newell

Diane Newell, the workpackage leader of Med-Vet-Net�s most recent research initiative, Workpackage 34 � Campylobacter in poultry, was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE)�in this year�s Queen�s Birthday Honours for services to science.

Professor Newell said she was very proud to have received the award, which she considers was, in part, for her work with Med-Vet-Net.

Workpackage 34

Workpackage 34, Med-Vet-Net�s newest research initiative, kicked off in September 2008 under the leadership of Professor Diane Newell on behalf of the UK�s Veterinary Laboratories Agency.

Focused on Campylobacter jejuni,� the workpackage is undertaking a series of tasks designed to consolidate what is presently a highly fragmented information base on the most common cause of human acute enteritis.

5th MVN ASM

The 5th and final Med-Vet-Net Annual Scientific Meeting will take place from 3 to6 June 2009 at Euroforum Infantes, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, Spain.

Poster instructions

Posters should be no more than 90 cm wide and 120 cm high (A0 paper size will fit well).
NB your poster should be in potrait (vertical) format not landscape so that it will fit on the boards.

If you would like assistance with printing your poster please contact the Med-Vet-Net Communications Unit: we will need to receive your poster (preferably in PDF format) at least one week before the start of the conference.

Fixings for posters will be provided by Med-Vet-Net administration at the conference.

A map of poster locations, organized by theme, will be provided in delegates� conference packs.

For Med-Vet-Net projects a basic PowerPoint template is available here. It is expected that each Workpackage will produce a poster, please contact the Commmunications Unit if you would like help with layout and printing.
