Workpackage 11 - TrichiNet

A European network for risk assessment, detection and control of trichinellosis - in old and future member states

Trichinellosis is re-emerging in Europe and several outbreaks during the last 10-15 year have clearly illustrated the need for improved guidelines for prevention and control in food-producing animals and for the treatment of human infections. The disease is listed in the EC Zoonoses Directive, and meat from millions of pigs, horses and game animals are subject to mandatory inspection costing the EU over 500 million Euro annually. The sources of infection in man vary, but risk is primarily confined to extensively-bred livestock and game. Most outbreaks arise from un-inspected meat imported from the new member states of the EU. Thus, the aims of this Workpackage are to create a scientific network that will gather available information on the occurrence of Trichinella in animals and man in the European region, assess current meat inspection technology, create a European repository for standardisation and develop future proposals for research on Trichinella and trichinellosis.

Objectives

The overall aim of this workpackage is to establish A European network for the risk assessment, detection and control of trichinellosis. This network will:

  • develop a central database of prevalence and epidemiology
  • assess available technology for meat inspection
  • establish a central repository for standardisation
  • disseminate research information to stakeholders
  • develop a road map for future research Trichinella and trichinellosis
