5th ASM - Orals Antimicrobial Resistance

The first two presentations were dealing with a new emerging resistance gene family called methylases. Methylases are conferring high level resistance to aminoglycosides. Both studies presented were output from WP29.

Those presentations were presented by Katie Hopkins from HPA and Laura Hidalgo from UCM reporting detection of those acquired aminoglycoside resistance mechanism in various enterobacteriacae from human but also food product.

The third presentation was from Portugal. Dr Contança Pomba showed four cases of calves infected with multidrug resistance E. coli after a cefquinome treatment. Strains recovered were all CTX-M and qnr positive.

The last presentation from Maike Koningstein from Denmark dealt with antimicrobial use and how it affects the risk for humans to be infected by a Campylobacter after an antimicrobial treatment. This study highlight an increased risk of getting campylobacteriosis in the following year after being exposed to fluoroquinolones or macrolides. Nevertheless, macrolides appear to have a protecting effect against Campylobacter infection during 6 weeks after treatment.

Chair: Sophie Granier (AFSSA)
